Masayuki Yamakawa was born in Tottori Prefecture in 1964. After graduating from Tottori University’s Faculty of Medicine, he enrolled in clinical training programs such as emergency medical care of the 1st Internal Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine) of Tottori University Hospital . Upon completing the training as a resident, he chose to switch specialties, believing in the potential of healthcare services not covered by NHI. After founding Seishin Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Clinic Co., Ltd. in Fukuoka in 1993, he moved its headquarters to Tokyo and expanded the business to major cities across Japan. He was impressed by what UCLA reported in 2001 that fat tissues contain many somatic stem cells. Based on his clinical experience, he knew that skin type and color can be enhanced through the administration of a fat injection for facial contouring. Attracted to the potential of fat tissues, he founded THE CLINIC, specializing in liposuction and fat injection in 2007. In 2010, he clinically applied fat tissues to breast augmentation and anti-aging treatment using the technology to mechanically crush the tissues to enrich stem cells by centrifugation. After that, he strived to promote this technique by providing technical training to cosmetic surgeons at other clinics through seminars and workshops. In 2014, he started to consider clinical application of fat tissues in medical practices in other fields. In 2015, he founded CellSource Co., Ltd. with Masato Tsumamoto in response to the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine that came into effect in 2014, and then, retired from the company. In 2022, he once again joined CellSource as a director, aiming to further promote core projects such as early clinical applications of exosomes.
